Keygrid Foundations
A structured beginning for learning polyphonic music on a
perfect-fourths keygrid.
Set up a practical instrument, understand the layout, play first musical shapes, make an initial connection to notation, and enter a repeatable Practice Loop.
Hosted inside The Keygrid Path community on Skool. See what you’ll learn ↓
Keygrid Foundations takes you from first orientation to a small but complete learning rhythm. You do not need to understand the full layout, Ableton, music notation, or two-hand technique before beginning. The course introduces each layer in sequence and gives you one clear action at a time.
By the end of Foundations, the learner can:
Set up a basic keygrid system and produce sound.
Understand chromatic movement, vertical fourths, natural notes, accidentals, and repeated note locations.
Use a relaxed beginner hand method to play first melodies, intervals, triads, and a simple two-hand texture.
Connect Middle C and a short written pattern to the grid.
Choose one small Practice Target and record a short clip.
Use Learn → Play → Record → Share → Feedback → Refine as a repeatable practice rhythm.
Begin with a practical setup
The primary Keygrid Foundations setup uses Novation Launchpad X with Ableton Live or Live Lite. One grid is enough to begin; two grids expand the range and create a more comfortable two-hand instrument. Compatible grid devices and sound setups may also work, but the course demonstrations follow the Launchpad X and Ableton path.
A computer capable of running the required software
One compatible grid controller or keygrid instrument
Ableton Live, Live Lite, or a compatible sound source
Wired headphones or speakers
A stable desk and chair setup
An audio interface is recommended for lower latency
You can begin the orientation module before owning the full setup.
Module 1 helps you understand the instrument and identify your starting path before Module 2 walks through the practical setup.
Keygrid Foundations includes more than video explanations. Its resources are designed to help you set up, look something up, complete a small task, and continue practising without searching through unrelated material.
Six structured course modules
Orientation, setup, map, first shapes, reading, recording, feedback, and the Practice Loop.
Ableton starter resources
A basic starting set, setup guidance, audio and latency notes, and simple troubleshooting support.
Keygrid diagrams and playing references
The master note map, grid compass, hand-position references, finger numbers, shift guidance, interval shapes, triads, and notation-to-grid material.
The Visual Reference Guide
A browsable companion that gathers the central diagrams and quick-reference pages into one public guide.
Practice Materials // Beginner 1 Practice Bits
A bank of simple Play, Understand, and Create targets for beginning the Practice Loop.
Community templates
Introduction prompts, first-clip structure, recording guidance, and standards for useful feedback.
Use the Visual Reference Guide alongside the course
The Visual Reference Guide is a free companion to Keygrid Foundations. Browse the keygrid layout, note map, hand-positioning diagrams, first musical shapes, reading references, and the Practice Loop whenever you need a reminder.
Use the guide to look something up. Use Keygrid Foundations to follow the sequence, watch the demonstrations, and put the ideas into practice.
Learn the lesson. Take one action. Continue the path.
1. Join The Keygrid Path
The free course is hosted inside the Skool community.
2. Begin with Module 1
Move through the modules in order at first so the setup, map, playing, reading, and practice layers build naturally.
3. Complete one small action
Each lesson ends with a practical next step rather than passive watching alone.
4. Use the community when helpful
Share introductions, setup questions, short practice clips, observations, and focused questions.
5. Enter the Practice Loop
Choose one small target, make it visible, receive or review one useful note, refine one thing, and repeat.
Short clips. Clear questions. Respectful feedback. Progress over perfection.
You will not have to invent your first practice target
The opening Practice Materials collection gives you a choice of simple targets under three headings:
Play, Understand, Create
The opening bank contains eight Play targets, four Understand targets, and three Create targets. Choose one. It is a collection of options, you don't have to complete them all.
A clear beginning, with room to grow
Keygrid Foundations gives you a working setup, a first map of the instrument, simple musical shapes, an introduction to notation, and a repeatable practice rhythm. From there, you can develop technique, reading, repertoire and creative projects through continued practice, future curriculum, or individual guidance.
Continue in a direction that interests you
Develop technique, fluency, two-hand coordination, and repertoire.
Deepen reading, intervals, harmony, key signatures, chords, and inversions.
Explore improvisation, composition, arranging, and production.
You do not need to choose an entire specialization now. Complete Foundations, choose one next Practice Target, and let your direction become clearer through experience.
Course-specific FAQ
Is Keygrid Foundations free?
Yes. Keygrid Foundations is the free beginner entry course inside The Keygrid Path community.
Do I need two Launchpad X units?
No. One grid is enough to begin. Two grids expand range & create a more comfortable two-hand setup.
Do I need Ableton?
The primary course path uses Ableton Live or Live Lite, and the setup demonstrations follow that system. Compatible alternatives may work, but they may require you to adapt some of the technical steps.
Can I join before buying a controller?
Yes. You can begin with the orientation material, understand the instrument, and identify your likely setup before purchasing or completing the practical modules.
Do I need piano or keyboard experience?
No. The course begins with the layout itself. Guitarists, bassists, producers, keyboard players, music students, composers, teachers, and curious beginners can enter from different starting points.
Do I need to know music theory or notation?
No advanced background is required. The course introduces the specific note-map, interval, chord, and notation ideas needed for the first path.
Will this teach me advanced repertoire or complete technique?
No. Foundations gives a complete beginner orientation and first practice system. Advanced technique, repertoire, reading fluency, harmony, and polyphonic development belong beyond this introductory course.
Is the Visual Reference Guide part of the course?
The guide is a free public companion to the course. It helps you revisit diagrams and concepts, while the course supplies the order, explanations, demonstrations, actions, and community rhythm.
